Roy Turner celebrates 50 years as a Mark Mason

12th September 2013

Leyland Mark Lodge saw a very special event on September 12th, as the Provincial team descended on them to celebrate 50 years as a Mark Man for W Bro Roy Turner, PSGD.

35 of the Provincial team took this opportunity to support our Provincial Grand Master on this very first team visit of the new season.  The rumours that they are far better looking than any team before can only be judged using the attached pictures...however, there was a real buzz about the room as everyone arrived an hour before, to be booked in by John Waring from the provincial office, who also has the job of treasurer of Leyland Lodge - a busy man!

Dave Emmerson, our hard-working Provincial DC, ably assisted by Ken Boon and Brian Gregson, soon drilled the team into shape, and everyone was soon where they had to be for the Lodge to open. No fewer than 20 Grand officers attended the event to support Roy, and they paraded in with the Provincial team to make a fine spectacle. Peter Connolly was offered the gavel of Leyland Lodge by the WM John Dean, and on this occasion he retained it, and introduced the new acting officers, with a personal comment about each person - demonstrating once again his great attention to fine detail.

Then it was time for the main event of the evening - a celebration of 50 years in Mark Masonry for W Bro Roy Turner PGSD. Peter Connolly had obviously spent a lot of time with Roy, in preparation for this evening. We were treated to a fascinating insight into the life of a man who has worked tirelessly for the Mark Degree. In public life, Roy was a photographer for the Police, and was actually involved in the Moors murder case, as well as many other high profile cases. In his speech after dinner, he revealed that as Junior Warden of the Mark Province in 1981, he did no less than 81 visits, at which Peter Connolly fixed his latest Wardens with a questioning stare, and the Prov.GJW responded with an affirmative thumbs up !

W Bro Roy had looked a little pensive before the meeting, which was only to be expected, but soon got into the swing of the evening, and his speech after dinner was superb. He thanked all those involved in the organisation of the event, especially the secretary of Leyland Mark Lodge, W Bro Colin Mills. The dining room was almost up to capacity, with friends from all over the area, and all over the Province, enjoying another wonderful Mark evening.
